Gelato Making Class

|Gelato. You probably know what the word means. It has become quite an international term – spanning across age groups, regions, languages and cultures. Let’s find out how it was born… Did you know that the first Gelato recipe was actually created by the Romans? On the other hand, the first people to serve something that we can define as gelato’s predecessor were the Egyptians. How is that possible? Well, first of all it is very hot in Egypt and Pharaohs always managed to have things done their way! They served their guests chalices divided into two parts, one with snow and one with fruits!
Imagine how hard it must have been to have snow imported without melting! Then, just about 2,000 years ago, when Ancient Roman Emperors and very rich citizens needed something to quench the heat of the Roman summer, General Quinto Fabio Massimo wrote the first ever written recipe of the gelato! He was not only a great general, he was gelato expert too! This is considered to be the birth of the ice cream
industry of the Ancient world! The Romans went as far to frozen mountain peaks and transported blocks of ice back to Rome – the capital.
During the Middle Ages, Gelato tradition was forgotten and got sucked into the darkness that the new Era brought about in all socio-political and cultural aspects. However, when the Arabs took over Sicily they brought back the tradition of this sweet delicacy – the sorbet – and taught it to the Sicilians! The first ever gelato sold in public was by a Sicilian man called Francesco dei Coltelli!
